Weed Community Expresses Concerns Over Their Library

It was standing room only at City Hall with many concerned community members on the evening of August 14th during the regular Weed City Council meeting due to concerns about potentially losing their library. The people in the City of Weed have been in an uproar after recently learning that the City Council wants to sell the building that houses the Weed Library โ€“ a decision made without any public notice or community input.

After leasing the building for a couple of years, the City of Weed purchased the building that houses the library on Alamo Avenue for $270,000 from Banner Bank in 2023. The non-profit group, Friends of the Library, donated $120,000 toward that purchase. Now, the Weed City Police Chief, Justin Mayberry, who is also currently serving as Interim City Manager, wants to sell the building and has brought it to the Weed City Council to vote on making it โ€˜surplus propertyโ€™ so it can be sold.

The library staff said that they heard about this just two weeks ago.ย Even though there have been discussions about selling the building that houses the library, โ€œthere have yet been no offers on the building,โ€ according to Mayberry. The Interim City Manager assured that they plan on relocating the library to meet more needs, like locating it in a more central place in town, with more parking and โ€œaccessibility,โ€ but they are still looking for a new location.ย There is no plan in place yet.ย The preliminary step is to make the building โ€œsurplusโ€ so it can be sold โ€“ despite having no concrete relocation plan for the library.
