For nearly two months, Mayor Colleen Baker has welcomed residents to Yreka City Hall every Friday from 2:30 to 3:30 PM for open chamber hours, fostering direct, town hall-style discussions. This ongoing initiative builds on the momentum of a recent informal meeting I attended, where I congratulated Mayor Baker on her selection as Yrekaโs new mayor after a lengthy process.
That meeting was refreshing and collaborative, with a focus on community involvement. A new couple, who moved from Half Moon Bay to Yreka in November, stood out for their eagerness to contribute to their adopted town. Mayor Baker engaged them in a one-on-one conversation, while the โpeanut crewโ in attendance shared insights and resources.
When Mayor Baker called the local resource center a โgreat resource,โ the room chuckled. โIt lives up to its name,โ she said, highlighting its value to Yreka.
Local projects took center stage. Mrs. Favero of the Red Scarf Society discussed the delayed Yreka Theater project, poised to host concerts and performances once approved. She praised the Yreka High School (YHS) theatre crew for their excellent sound and lighting at a matinee performance by The Moaninโ Frogs on April 27 at the YHS Performing Arts Center, organized by the Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts (RSSPA). The event showcased Yrekaโs appeal to a global audience.
Mrs. Peters emphasized the Siskiyou County Museumโs role in drawing visitors into town. Operated by volunteers, the museum thrives despite relying on community support for upkeep and improvements.
The meeting was a productive exchange of ideas, free of complaints, with organizers, citizens, and newcomers united to enhance Yreka. Mayor Bakerโs genuine listening and note-taking set a constructive tone.
Now, after nearly two months of open chamber hours, Mayor Baker continues to invite residents to City Hall on Fridays from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. Stop by, share your thoughts, listen, learn, and help shape Yrekaโs future.
