Siskiyou County Faces Early Start to Fire Season with Multiple Wildfires in May 2025

SISKIYOU COUNTY, CAย โ€“ Last week, Siskiyou County experienced an early onset of the 2025 fire season, with the CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit responding to a series of wildfires, including theย Spring Fire,ย Stage Fire,ย Upland Fire, andย Pluto Fire, as detailed in their Facebook updates from May 19โ€“24, 2025.

On the evening of May 19th, Theย Spring Fire, near Mount Shasta City Park, consumed 12 acres of timber and brush, its spread was halted. Authorities are seeking a slender white male with short dark curly hair, last seen in grey sweatpants near the park, in connection with the fire. The public is urged to contact Mount Shasta Police at (530) 926-7540 with information but not to approach. The cause remains under investigation.

On May 21, the Stage Fire ignited near S. Old Stage Rd and Wagon Wheel Rd in Mount Shasta, burning just 0.25 acres of vegetation. CAL FIRE and local fire departments swiftly contained it, with no evacuations or road closures reported. The cause is still under investigation.

The Upland Fire in Hornbrook, reported on May 22, scorched 7.1 acres of grass after an escaped debris burn. CAL FIRE, alongside Yreka and Montague Fire Departments, stopped its spread without evacuations. CAL FIRE stressed safe burning practices, urging residents to secure permits at burnpermit.fire.ca.gov and maintain clear zones around burn piles.

On May 24, the Pluto Fire in the Mount Shasta Vista Subdivision grew to 11.69 acres. CAL FIRE contained the blaze, and the Siskiyou County Sheriffโ€™s Office lifted an evacuation warning for zone SIS-5120 by 4:50 PM. The cause is under investigation.
