Perfect weather, excited kids, and plenty of fish make for a memorable community event
Saturday, May 3rd dawned with a cool, crisp Siskiyou morning—perfect conditions for the 1st Annual Yreka Elks Lodge #1980 Fishing Derby. The peaceful waters of the reservoir reflected the anticipation of 177 young anglers who arrived eager to test their fishing skills in pursuit of bragging rights and impressive prizes.

Volunteers had prepared for up to 200 fishing contestants between the ages of 3-15, with participants divided into three competitive age groups. The event marked a welcome revival of a cherished tradition, bringing families together around the timeless sport of fishing.
“It was truly a family affair,” remarked one of the organizers. “Mothers fishing alongside sons, uncles teaching nieces—everyone coming together to create lasting memories while enjoying the outdoors.”

Members of E. Clampus Vitas Humbug Chapter 73 were on hand throughout the derby, efficiently measuring and recording catches while radioing in results. Their involvement carried special significance, as the fishing derby had been a longstanding tradition for the Humbug chapter before its hiatus.

The competition proved exciting across all age brackets. In the 3-7 year old division, Zayden Eng claimed first place with an impressive 19.5-inch catch, earning a bike of choice and trophy. The 8-11 year old group saw Isabella Llewelyn match that measurement for her first-place finish, while the 12-15 category featured a special prize thanks to a last-minute donation—winner Aiden Hyde chose an exciting guided salmon fishing trip over the traditional bike prize.

The derby’s success extended beyond the competition itself. The Elks Lodge raised nearly $5,000 through the event, ensuring the derby’s return next year. This achievement was made possible through generous community support, with over twenty local businesses and organizations sponsoring the event.
Preparations for the derby began weeks earlier with the stocking of 2,400 trout, allowing the fish time to acclimate to their environment. The result is a well-stocked reservoir that promises excellent fishing opportunities throughout the summer months.
As the final catches were measured and prizes awarded, the sentiment among participants and organizers was unanimous—the 1st Yreka Elks Lodge Fishing Derby had established itself as a cherished community tradition, one that celebrates outdoor recreation, family bonds, and the spirit of friendly competition.

Isabella academic achevments places her at the top 1% in
education proficiency test scores and a Jackson Street Elem. homeschooled student.
