Garden Gab: Greetings from the garden!

When I was asked to write an article about gardening, I was excited! Herein lies another outlet for me to gab about gardening. Anyone who knows me, knows not to ask me a gardening question unless you really want a hardcore gardening answer. Gardening is my passion. I could talk about gardening for hours, and hours, and more hours. That being said, the hardest aspect of writing an article about gardening was deciding on what topic to write about first in approximately 350 words. Oh, be still my heart.

On with it then…Here we are in the joyous season of Fall. Autumn. The spooky season. All things pumpkin spice. Harvest time. The days are rapidly growing shorter and colder and it is kind of the wrong time of year to start a writing a news column on gardening. The garden season is winding down. Right? Wrong my friends.

It is a common misconception that the garden season is coming to an end with the end of summer. I prefer to say that the outdoor growing season is coming to an end. For me, gardening is an all year undertaking. My winter is filled with crop planning, perusing seed catalogs, taking inventory of my seed stock, plant sourcing, research and garden dreaming. Soon it will be February and time for me to start indoor seeds for onions, peppers and other long season crops.

If you want to garden, the best time to start your garden is now! Whether you already have an established garden or if you are starting from scratch and have never grown anything in your life. Next time, I will explain how and why it is important to plan your next year’s garden before the next year’s growing season.

I am struggling to wrap this up because I will exceed my word limit (I tried to warn you). So let me leave you with these thoughts to ponder. You do not have to have a huge garden to reap the benefits of gardening. True, you may have an acre of dedicated growing space, but you may only have a single pot of basil in your kitchen, or you may also have an obscene number of houseplants (I qualify in all these categories by the way). I am an advocate that everyone has the ability to grow something, anything; and with that reap the many benefits that gardening offers. As always, I am looking forward to gabbing about everything gardening. Let’s chat soon.

Here’s to growing all the things.
