Cowfolk are a tough bunch.
The Squaw Valley Riding Club held their 10th Annual Whitey Jespersen Memorial Team Roping over the weekend bringing many folks to compete and the public to watch this three day event under the shadey during the hottest time of the summer.
The kids events were on Friday night and got started at about 8 PM when it was a little cooler. There were 14 children in the competition ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 13 years. Most rode horses, but 5-year-old Ryker Gress and 6-year-old Callen Zanni rode double on Samule (Sam the mule) throughout the competition.
All the contestants won prizes for competing. Each child got to pick out some type of horse tack and they got to keep the decorations they put on their horses.

They ended up winning first place in the horse decoration contest.
The games or should we say, “competitions” include a run around the pole, Egg Red Light-Green Light, a Ribbon Race, Barrel crawl Race (without the horse taking off while they crawled through the barrel), and the horse decoration contest where first place wins $50 and second place gets $25.
Ryker and Callen placed first, McCloud’s own 7-year-old Kennedy Klebig riding Murphy who is 22 years old took second, and 2-1/2-year-old Thiyya El Adel placed third on her pony named Hazel.
10-year-old Knox Williemm, 13-year-olds Taylor Schack and Carson Cash along with Megan Clark and Taya Sharrah will also be competing in the adult team roping on Saturday and Sunday as well.
