A new bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would rename Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia after former President Donald J. Trump.
The bill, titled “To designate the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as the ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport'”, was introduced by Representative Guy Reschenthaler, a Republican from Pennsylvania. If enacted, the bill would officially change the name of the airport to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.
According to the short text of the bill, the name change would go into effect immediately upon the legislation being signed into law. The bill states that after that point, any references to the airport in U.S. laws, regulations, maps, documents, papers or other government records would be considered a reference to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.
Washington Dulles International Airport is located in Dulles, Virginia, about 26 miles west of downtown Washington D.C. Opened in 1962, it is one of the busiest airports in the U.S., serving over 24 million passengers in 2019.
The airport is currently named after John Foster Dulles, who served as U.S. Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 1950s. It remains to be seen whether this bill to rename the airport after the controversial 45th President will gain traction in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.
Airports and other transportation facilities in the U.S. are occasionally renamed to honor former presidents, usually many years after their terms have ended. For example, Washington National Airport was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in 1998, over a decade after Reagan left office. If passed, this would likely be the first major transportation hub renamed after Trump.
The bill has been referred to a House committee for consideration. Its prospects for advancing through Congress are unclear at this time. The proposed renaming is likely to spark significant political debate, given Trump’s divisive presidency and polarizing legacy.
