Please Publish Drought Monitor Maps Regularly

Opinion

SVN has published claims by Theodora Johnson that the drought is over and so groundwater extraction restrictions should be lifted and that the agreements extractors made with DFW to limit extraction should be cancelled.

However, according to the Western Drought monitor conditions in SisCo are still “abnormally dry”. That is a category on the drought continuum:

https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap.aspx

Clearly it is premature to lift restrictions and cancel agreements.

To counter such false claims, please consider publishing the current Drought Monitor map weekly as well as Information from DFW indicating that the Scott Valley is not pulling its weight in helping Coho survive and revive:

“TheFinal Recovery Plan for the Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU) of Coho Salmonprepared by NOAA NMFS reports that6,500 returning adult spawners are required forESU viability. Based on CDFW records, since 2004,returning adult spawners in theScott River have ranged from 58 (2004) to 2,644 (2010), with 236 returning adults counted through December 26, 2022.”

There is also info (see attached for an example) that makes it clear that inadequate Scott flows are a problem for Scott Chinook and Coho.

Thanks for your excellent site and work bringing good information to the people. 👍
