Yreka High Top 100 Honors Program

Going through a FB search, it is about time someone wrote a bit about it.

Jay Martin SNN

Montague & Yreka Rotary Clubs and Untied Scholarships, Inc. awarded approximately $149,300 to Yreka High School graduating class of 2023

The USI program began modestly.  Ed Foss,  Yreka resident and owner of the local newspaper, began the organization over coffee one morning.  Sitting with a few of his buddies, he asked them to “cough up” some money for scholarships for a couple seniors from the high school.  That was 1964 and two scholarships were awarded that year in the amount of $50.  Today, 56 years later, USI has awarded 3,057 scholarships totaling more than $3,887,550 to graduates from Yreka Union High School District.

Imagine my surprise at seeing your picture near the top of this article, and discovering I had won an award in 1964, after my sixth grade school year. I have not been notified until today’s inadvertent discovery. Five hundred dollars from 1964, would be a substantial sum of money to receive fifty-nine years later. Actually, I think this represents money my brother JIM Steinhaus earned. It would be a great gesture to replace/correct the plaque with his name from 1964. As far as I know, he is alive and living in Marietta, Georgia. My heart sank a bit when I read at the beginning about this was from the two Rotary Clubs and “Untied” Scholarships. Maybe this is part of the untied portion?? You are collectively responsible for some splendid and praiseworthy actions for the graduates of Yreka High. Accuracy is an important part of education.

How interesting John, I wonder if it was you Brother Jim that wow a scholarship for 50$ in 1964.. 1964 was a couple of years before me for sure but as for accuracy I bet the United Scholarships Inc. will take a closer look. Thanks 👍
