10th District Junior Livestock Sale tops 1.2 million at Jackson County Expo

The Siskiyou Golden Fair faced adversity again in 2022 and due to the State of Emergency declared because of the McKinney fire, the fair was cancelled just 10 days before it was supposed to open on August 10th. The 10th DAA Board of Directors, staff, the 10th DAA Junior Livestock Committee and fairground officials from the Jackson County Expo met and planned a never-before attempted event across state lines that would allow the Siskiyou County agricultural youth livestock projects to move to Oregon and be shown and sold in Central Point.

Careful planning by youth exhibitors makes it imperative that these animals go to market on time – there are minimum and maximum weights that must be met to satisfy processing facilities and the window of opportunity is very tight. There were nine days to move equipment, set up and create a show and sale that would allow the “show to go on”.

Thanks to all our regular crew and those in Jackson County that offered not only the facilities but volunteers and a warm welcome, the results are in and spectacular.

In 2022, the 10th DAA Junior Livestock Auction reached another record total –

$1,200,452.93 surpassing the 2021 record of $1,129,963.24.

Averages for each species were as follows:

  • Ag Mechanics – $1712.56 per lot

  • Rabbits – $43.38 per pound

  • Turkeys – $51.37 per pound

  • Chickens – $36.54 per pound

  • Goats – $20.33 per pound

  • Lambs – $21.72 per pound, Swine – $18.24 per pound

  • Dairy Heifers – $5635.02 per head

  • Commercial Beef Heifers – $5612.94

  • Registered Beef Heifers – $6430.28

  • Steers – $6.10 per pound

Planning is beginning for the 2023 Siskiyou Golden Fair which is scheduled for August 9-13, 2023.
