Obituary

Longtime Scott Valley resident Robert F. “Pete” Munson passed away on July 17, 2022 at his home in Etna. He was 81 years old. Pete was born in Eureka on August 22, 1940 to Floyd Lambert Munson and Mary Pauline Olsen Munson and promptly moved to Callahan with his parents. The Munson family spent many generations cutting timber and mining in the local area and still today you can see the old Munson Mill Pond as you travel out to Callahan on Highway 3. At Etna High School, Pete met high school sweetheart Carol Hammond, daughter of Carl and Jessie Hammond, and the two were married in Reno on July 16, 1960. Three children were added to the family: Cliff, Lori and Rob, and by 1964 the family was complete. In 1975, Pete and Carol moved to Horse Creek and in 1977 were finally in a position to take 10 cows from Carol’s childhood herd and start Kohl Creek Angus along the Klamath River. Pete had a long career in slash and fire for the U.S. Forest Service and was stationed in Happy Camp, Callahan, Gasquet and Oak Knoll during his 32-year career in fire suppression. His second career as a cattleman spanned 44 years along the Klamath River and in Scott Valley. When Pete decided to take on a project, he worked tirelessly to perfect the product. He collected and restored antiques, was a master gardener, played and coached sports – in a high school 6-man football game he scored six touchdowns in the first half of a single game. He participated as an actor in the Klamath River Community Hall productions and spent countless hours studying breed magazines to improve the cow herd. Pete was a board member and past president of the Klamath River Community Hall, a member of the Crescent City Jaycees, a past baseball coach, a member of the American Angus Association, a big supporter of the Etna FFA, and was well known for his fishing prowess along the Smith River. In 2013, Robert F. “Pete” Munson was honored as the 60th Siskiyou County Cattleman of the Year. Pete leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Carol; two brothers, Douglas “Hap” (Joan) and Richard “Oscar”; and three children, Cliff (Maryann), Lori Bennett (John) and Rob (Eileen). He was blessed with 13 grandchildren and their spouses, and 21 great grandchildren at his passing. A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the Etna Cemetery. Following the service, a potluck luncheon will be held at the home of Rob and Eileen Munson, 2825 Kidder Creek Road in Greenview. Meat and bread will be provided. Charitable donations can be made in Pete’s name to Madrone Hospice Inc. or Scott Valley Scholarships.
