The Feast Day of Saint Gregory Palamas was celebrated at the Saint Gregory Palamas Monastery in Etna, California, on the Second Sunday of Great Lent, March 3/16. The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was attended by the resident monks of the Monastery, together with some of the nuns of the Convent of Saint Elizabeth the Grand Duchess of Russia, the parishioners of Saints Cyprian and Justina Orthodox Church, faculty members and students of Saint Photios Orthodox Theological Seminary, and visiting pilgrims from Oregon and the Northern California area.

His Grace, Bishop Maximus of Pelagonia, a Visiting Instructor at the Seminary who resides at the Hermitage of Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer in Guatemala, was also in attendance.

Bishop Maximus gave a sermon at the Divine Liturgy in which he encouraged those in attendance to make an effort to imitate Saint Gregory’s life in word and in spirit to the fullest extent possible.
“Each of us can draw from him that which is most appropriate to ourselves—that which we feel closest to ourselves,” His Grace stated.
“And the entire community here, and in particular the Monastery, can grow in the life in Christ because we have this shining luminary, our Father among the Saints, Gregory Palamas, who sits together with all the Saints at the right hand of God.”

The nuns from Convent of Saint Elizabeth the Grand Duchess of Russia organized the festal banquet held after the Divine Liturgy at the Saint Photios Orthodox Theological Seminary. Beautiful decorations based on a forest theme were placed at each table. Even forest-themed menus were available for guests to request certain items from the Kitchen.

The nuns prepared all of the dishes, while the students of the Seminary served the guests.

Founded in 1976 by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Etna (1943–2019) and by Bishop Auxentios of Etna and Portland, the Saint Gregory Palamas Monastery was initially established in Highland, California. It later relocated to Hayesville, Ohio, before settling in its current location in Etna, California, in 1983.
