Dunsmuir’s 28th Annual River and Rail Brewfest

What fun people had at the 28th Annual River and Rail Brewfest in Dunsmuir which is one of the oldest beer festivals on the West Coast.

Literally, a thousand people came.  The spacious layout of the different beer booths among the craft and food vendors gave folks a chance to roam while enjoying their taste-testing. And it wasn’t just local people, many folks from Redding and RedBluff came up to get out of the heat and enjoy a leisurely afternoon tasting new and different brews while listening (and dancing) to great music from two popular bands.

Anna Jae Band from Redding
and the local favorite Secret Society Handshake

Starting off with a cornhole tournament prior to the festival through Nor-Cal Cornhole Association (which is a non-profit and can be found on Facebook), Deven Braden and Austin Raglin walked away with 1st place and $180, and Chal Saelee and Ken Chao took 2nd place and won themselves $100 beating out the 17 other competing teams.

The breweries were plentiful and the variety of drafts made for a great hunt to find each individual’s favorite. People would line up with their custom 4oz tasting glass when they heard of a new release as breweries would introduce new varieties at different times during the festival.

Woodys’ Brewery from Redding sold out of their Barrel Aged Sour in under two hours. Many were lining up to try some Maple Bacon Doughnut Stout when it was announced that it was going to be released at 7pm. Tim Imhoff, a 83′ Dunsmuir graduate, found Etna’s Blackberry Blond to be delicious. Ruth Gilroy of Redding swears that McKinleyville’s 6 Rivers Brewery Asquatch Double IPA was the best of the evening.

Dunsmuir Brewery also had other items available at their beer booth.

Yet, screening people’s opinion of their favorite beer, who knows what the people’s choice for the best commercial craft would be from the various breweries and numerous different beers. It is hard to imagine what a macadamia nut porter or hazy attitude beer would taste like.

The Dunsmuir Chamber and the Dunsmuir Rotary hosted this event and had 40 “volunbeers” to keep everything running smoothly.

Thinking ahead,  a shuttle service was available to return guests to Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta.

There were other activities to involve the whole family. Some, like Fire Safe, Shasta Bioregional, Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, Mountain Top Athletics, Dunsmuir Rotary and the Dunsmuir Chamber booths, offered T-shirts, other information about this area as well as games

 and bubbles for children.

The raffle was a big hit with top of the line big wins. Sponsors were Pace Engineering, Yaks on the 5, Mt. Shasta Ski Park, Ted Fay Fly Shop, Railroad Park Resort, Meyer & Sons Heating Plumbing & Air Conditioning, Clemens Waste Removal, The Pizza Factory, Mt. Shasta Supermarket/Dunsmuir Supermarket, Blaze1, Mossbrae Hotel.
