The Moon was full Sunday, the 31st. This puts us in another passive Moon phase. During this waning phase, from full to new, is a good time to spend on garden maintenance like building a compost pile. Compost is an essential part of any garden. The idea is to recycle and reuse organic materials into hummus rich soil instead of buying bags of soil, now at around $22.00 per two cubic feet.
This brings to the discussion the premise of becoming resource independent, another Permaculture Principle. This means using what is available on your property for resources instead of importing resources: fencing, firewood, mulch, compost, fodder, biochar, etc.
The biological magic that goes on in a compost pile provides nutrient rich soil, not dirt! This magic happens naturally in the fields and forests. You know that delicious smell that comes when you dig into the duff layer in the forest? That is the smell of the wonder fertilizer Hummus, “Black Gold.” This is what we’re going for with the garden compost pile.
