March 8, 1949 – May 8, 2026
Daniel Jess Freitas of Montague passed away on May 8, 2026, at the age of 77. Dan was loved by many throughout Siskiyou County and across the cattle industry. He dedicated his life to helping others, supporting his community, and making a lasting impact on countless lives.
Dan was born on March 8, 1949, in Yreka to Frank Freitas Jr. and Ruth Freitas. He was the middle son between his brothers, Roger and Mike. Dan graduated from Yreka High School in 1967 and later attended California State University, Chico. Growing up, he enjoyed working on the family ranch, hunting with his father and brothers, and hauling hay.
On October 17, 1969, Dan married the love of his life, Mary Loe. Together they built a life centered around family and raised three children: Carrie, Amy, and Jason. Later in life, Dan became a proud grandfather to six grandchildren. He loved attending their sporting events, supporting their fair projects, and cheering them on in every aspect of life. He took immense pride in all they had accomplished and all they would continue to become.
During the first 25 years of his career, Dan worked in the logging industry, where he owned his own logging truck and company. For the past 30 years, he hauled cattle in his well-known purple truck while also raising his own herd. Dan enjoyed working with Orland Livestock Commission Yard and considered them a second family. He was known as one of the hardest-working men around and was admired for his honesty, strength, and dedication to those he loved. No matter what the situation, Dan was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Dan loved working cattle, spending time outdoors, hunting, and caring for his cows. He was also a strong supporter of the Junior Livestock Auction at the Siskiyou Golden Fair, as well as many local agricultural and athletic programs. Some of his favorite memories were made by traveling with Mary to their grandchildrenโs sporting events and taking trips to Reno and the Oregon Coast.
Dan will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated community member. His selflessness, work ethic, and generous heart touched countless lives, and he will be deeply missed.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his brother, Roger; his children, Carrie Chaney (Ron), Amy Finley (Jason), and Jason Freitas (Mary); his grandchildren, Jake Chaney, Parker Finley, Casen Chaney, Sammi Freitas, Lilly Finley, and Emmie Freitas; three nieces; and his motherโs second husband, Ed Wiseman.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Freitas Jr.; his mother, Ruth Freitas Wiseman; and his brothers, Rodney Freitas and Mike Freitas.
A Celebration of Danโs Life will be held on June 6, 2026, from 1:00โ4:00 PM at the Montague Hall.
