Huge news for our rural communities this week: AB 1722 passed out of committee unanimously on a 10–0 vote, marking a major step forward in restoring common sense to California’s wildlife policies.
This bill ensures that individuals acting in good faith to protect themselves or others from harm are not punished under the California Endangered Species Act. At its core, AB 1722 is about a simple principle: no one should face civil or criminal penalties for defending their life or the lives of others.
We are especially grateful to El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Leikauf for his powerful testimony, and to the Brooks family for their courage in sharing their story. Their voices made a meaningful impact in advancing this legislation.
Thank you to the committee members for their unanimous support and for recognizing that public safety must remain a top priority. We will continue working to ensure our laws reflect real-world situations and protect the people who call rural California home.
AB 1722 now heads to the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
