With the advent and affordability of the automobile for regular folks back in the day, the convenience of travel created a demand for lodging. Auto Courts (aka Motor Hotels, which evolved into Motels) began to appear in the 1920s and 1930s. These places often offered small cabins in rows or U-shapes, with parking spaces next to each. If you ever watched the Clark Gable-Claudette Colbert film, “It Happened One Night,” you saw the typical auto court of the time.
