Chinook Season Concludes, Coho Counts Incomplete
The 2025 fall Chinook salmon run appears complete with minimal new arrivals in late November, while Coho salmon counts remain incomplete due to weather-related monitoring interruptions during peak migration periods.
Chinook Salmon – Net Upstream Passage Through November 20
Shasta River: 5,859 adult Chinook salmon
- Nov 13: 5,858 | Nov 6: 5,854 | Oct 22: 5,745 | Oct 16: 5,491
Scott River: 2,877 adult Chinook salmon
- Oct 21: 1,639 | Oct 16: 1,264 | Oct 9: 514 | Oct 2: 183
Bogus Creek: 316 adult Chinook salmon
- Nov 13: 319 | Nov 6: 324 | Oct 21: 323 | Oct 16: 265
Jenny Creek: 208 adult Chinook salmon
- Oct 22: 216 | Oct 16: 178 | Oct 9: 64 | Oct 2: 11
Shovel Creek: 263 Chinook salmon
- Nov 13: 261 | Nov 4: 260 | Oct 21: 194 | Oct 16: 140
Total Chinook documented: 9,523 fish
Coho Salmon – Incomplete Count Due to Monitoring Gaps
Through November 20, 47 Coho salmon have been documented:
- Scott River:ย 38 adult Coho
- Bogus Creek:ย 4 adult Coho
- Shasta River:ย 4 adult Coho
- Shovel Creek:ย 1 Coho
- Jenny Creek:ย 0 Coho
Important Note: These Coho counts are incomplete. Weirs were removed during two critical periods when Coho migration typically peaks:
- October 24-30:ย Bogus, Jenny, and Shovel weirs out
- November 4-19:ย Scott, Bogus, Jenny, and Shovel weirs out (Scott River operated sonar instead)
Historical graphs show 2025 Coho numbers were tracking above average during the periods when weirs were operational, suggesting significant numbers of Coho passed through during the monitoring gaps. Sonar data from Scott River will be reviewed and included in the final annual report.
Rainbow Trout/Steelhead (>16″)
- Shasta River: 278
- Scott River: 126
- Bogus Creek: 1
- Jenny Creek: 1
- Shovel Creek: 0
Weather Impacts on Late-Season Monitoring
Multiple storm events necessitated temporary weir removals during the critical November period when Coho salmon typically migrate:
First Removal – October 24:
- Bogus, Jenny, Shovel weirs removed
- Reinstalled Oct 27-30
Second Removal – November 4:
- Scott, Bogus, Jenny, Shovel weirs removed
- Scott River: Sonar installed (operated until Nov 19)
- Bogus: Reinstalled Nov 6
- Shovel: Reinstalled Nov 12
- Jenny: Reinstalled Nov 18
- Scott: Video weir reinstalled Nov 19
All monitoring stations are now fully operational.
2025 Season Summary
Chinook Salmon: Strong return with 9,523 documented fish – more than triple the 2,024 fish counted in 2024 at a comparable point in the season (mid-October 2024: Shasta River 1,871, Scott River 81, Bogus Creek 56).
Coho Salmon: 47 fish documented, but this represents an incomplete count due to extended monitoring gaps during peak Coho migration. Final escapement numbers will include sonar data analysis and downstream spawning surveys.
These counts represent net upstream passage at monitoring stations only. Significant spawning occurs downstream of counting facilities, particularly in Scott River and Bogus Creek. Sonar data from Scott River and final escapement estimates will be included in comprehensive annual reports.
