Siskiyou County resident Windfield “Wind” Beaver has been released from Israeli custody and arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 5, 2025, following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli naval forces. Beaver, a skilled mechanic and activist, was aboard the Ohwayla, a vessel crewed by American veterans and civilians aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. While Beaver is now free, many other activists, including American citizens, remain detained, prompting local and international calls for action.

Flotilla Mission and Interception

The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising over 40 civilian vessels and more than 500 participants from multiple countries, launched in late September 2025 to challenge Israelโ€™s maritime blockade of Gaza and deliver essential supplies, including food and medical equipment. Beaver, known for connecting Indigenous rights with global justice causes, joined the Ohwayla to provide mechanical expertise.

On October 2, 2025, Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, approximately 100 kilometers from Gaza. According to flotilla organizers, cited by Kym Kempโ€™s Redheaded Blackbelt (October 2, 2025), the operation involved communication jamming, drones, and โ€œsulfur waterโ€ to disorient crews. The Ohwayla and most other vessels were seized, with one boat, the Mikeno, possibly reaching Palestinian waters, though this remains unconfirmed.

The flotilla faced challenges prior to the interception. On September 26, the Family Boat suffered engine failure due to a complete loss of oil, which Beaver, a mechanic, described as suspicious, per a Facebook post by his brother, Ben Beaver. On October 1, the Johnny M was evacuated due to an irreparable engine room leak, forcing crew and aid to transfer to other vessels.

Beaverโ€™s Release and Detention Conditions

Beaver, the first American released, contacted his family from Istanbul on October 5, confirming he was in good health and spirits, according to a Facebook update from Ben Beaver. In interviews with Turkish media, reported by The New Arab (October 5, 2025), Beaver described harsh treatment during detention, including limited access to food, water, and medication. He alleged that high-profile activist Greta Thunberg, also detained, faced mistreatment, including being forced into a staged propaganda act, claims echoed by other detainees like Malaysian activist Hazwani Helmi.

Israel has begun deporting detainees, with 137 sent to Turkey on October 4 and four Italians released earlier, per Al Jazeera (October 4, 2025). However, hundreds, including at least two other Californiansโ€”David R.K. Adler and Thomas Marcusโ€”remain in custody, with Israel stating detentions may continue until after Yom Kippur (October 11-12).

Local Response and Calls for Action

Mary C. Fairbanks, a Siskiyou County resident, wrote to Siskiyou News on October 3, urging awareness to pressure U.S. officials to secure the release of Beaver and others. Fairbanks reported professional responses from the offices of Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Adam Schiff, and Sen. Alex Padilla, but described Rep. Doug LaMalfaโ€™s Redding office as dismissive, refusing to record detainee names.

Ben Beaver, in a Facebook post on October 5, credited grassroots advocacy, including โ€œcalls, emails, and posts,โ€ and thanked Veterans About Face for updates. He expressed concern that the seized vessels, including the Ohwayla, may be confiscated or destroyed, and the aid is unlikely to reach Gaza, aligning with Israelโ€™s prior statements.

Ongoing Efforts

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Los Angeles launched a petition demanding the release of detained Americans, calling the interception a โ€œkidnappingโ€ in international waters, a violation of international law. Protests in New York, Paris, and Tunis have amplified the issue, with independent flotillas forming in solidarity, per Middle East Eye(October 4, 2025).

Siskiyou County residents are urged to contact elected officials to advocate for the detaineesโ€™ release. For updates, visit globalsumudflotilla.org or follow Wind Beaverโ€™s Facebook page. To support CAIRโ€™s petition, visit cair.com.
