Trinity River Releases Set for Hoopa Boat Dance

Hoopa Valley- June 2023 (j.a.martin)

Water managers will increase Trinity River flows from 450 to 2,300 cubic feet per second between August 22-30 to support the traditional Hoopa Boat Dance ceremony.

The releases begin August 22nd with gradual increases, peak at 2,300 cfs on August 25th at noon, then systematically decrease back to 450 cfs by August 30th.

The coordinated eight-day release schedule represents collaboration between tribal representatives and federal water managers to support cultural practices while minimizing environmental impacts.

Peak flows will be more than five times normal summer levels, providing the specific water conditions required for this significant cultural ceremony on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation.
