It was the week the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office processed 71 bookings in seven days, turning the county jail into the hottest spot in Northern California.

The party started Monday when Dave Davis, a 75-year-old Utah man with a million-dollar bail, checked in for an extended stay. The staff placed him far from the marijuana growers’ wing, where four Chinese nationals – Cong, Huang, Wu, and Xiangchun – were enjoying a brief staycation after being caught tending illegal grows.

“It’s like a United Nations convention in there,” with Sergio Tolentino from Mexico and Jamsher Singh from India processed through booking on DUI charges. “They’re stamping passports faster than the airport.”

The DUI wing was particularly crowded. Samuel Bagwell, Jason Barry, and Riley Wilson formed an impromptu support group called “The Breathalyzers,” sharing tales of their failed field sobriety tests. Young Alejandro Trejo, barely 18, sat quietly in the corner, wondering how his first adult arrest landed him alongside these veterans.

Meanwhile, the warrant-dodgers were having a reunion. Amanda Talkington arrived with a record-breaking ten failure-to-appear warrants, earning her a standing ovation. Bethany Wilson and Arrianna Jackson weren’t far behind, their collection of warrants impressive enough to wallpaper the break room.

“We should give out frequent flyer miles,” as Alonso Rodriguez returned for his second booking in two days.

The real entertainment came Wednesday when Kathleen Wells, who claimed to be “from somewhere in England,” tried convincing officers she was actually Queen Elizabeth III. Her cellmate, Amy Oliver, spent the evening teaching Wells the proper American jail etiquette of using toilet paper as currency.

The domestic violence wing had its own drama. Stephen Hood was released after the DA declined to file charges, while Michael Wilson sat brooding in the corner, his parole violation ensuring a longer stay than his neighbors.

The homeless contingent claimed the east corridor, with David Bowers arriving with an impressive pharmacy in his backpack. His neighbor, railroad trespasser Michael Nicholson, spent his brief stay sketching train designs on napkins and advising everyone on the best camping spots in Weed.

Upscale crime was represented too. Christian Jacobson, arrested at Ace Hardware, kept explaining his business model of “leveraged retail acquisition” to anyone who would listen. Parker from Grants Pass tried to one-up him with tales of his smuggling enterprise at Tractor Supply.

By Friday, the jail staff had implemented a spreadsheet to keep track of all the court dates. Bail bondsmen were camped outside like concert ticket scalpers.

The weekend brought the cherry on top – Michael Budroe from Red Bluff, facing three felony charges and a $50,000 bail, who requested the “penthouse suite” and complained about the lack of room service.

As Monday morning dawned and the booking recap report printed out, I looked at the 41-page document and sighed. “Next week, let’s try for an even 100.” The jail, nicknamed “The Siskiyou Hilton” by locals, stands ready for another week of characters, crimes, and chaos in Sisq.
