The bodycam footage of an officer-involved shooting that took place on Christmas last year on an Amtrak train has been released by the Mount Shasta Police Department. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of West Lake Street and Pine Street in Mount Shasta on the Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Train.
The video was shared on the Police Department’s Facebook page, complying with California law, which mandates that recordings showing the discharge of a firearm at a person by a peace officer be made public within 45 days.
The footage begins with a narration explaining the situation that led to the confrontation between Officer Jeremiah Capurro and 32-year-old Nicholas Detweiler from Klamath County. Detweiler was reported by Amtrak personnel to be threatening staff and passengers with brass knuckles, displaying aggressive behavior, and potentially being under the influence.
In the video, Detweiler appears to be sleeping but then suddenly jumps up when approached by Officer Capurro. The situation escalates when Detweiler, appearing dazed and confused, fails to comply with Capurro’s orders and reaches for a plastic bag. Despite being tased, Detweiler remains standing and is seen reaching into his back pocket, removing a set of metal knuckles. He then swings at a crew member’s head with the metal knuckles, leading Officer Capurro to shoot him multiple times.
The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, with the California Attorney General’s Office and the state Department of Justice’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team conducting independent reviews.
The Coast Starlight train operates a route from Seattle to Los Angeles, making stops in several cities including Klamath Falls, OR, and Dunsmuir and Redding, CA.
