After Friday’s notification that wolves were in very close proximity to Little Shasta Elementary School, I contacted Superintendent Kayla Salvestro. I was informed that CDFW’s Jeff Stoddard had reached out to the school and provided statistics regarding wolf attacks on people, stating that there was very little risk. Mr. Stoddard also offered fladry and cameras as potential protective measures.
The school questioned the effectiveness of these tools and initially considered the offer. The school later determined that fladry was a measure they were willing to accept but expressed concerns about the use of cameras due to issues involving children and confidentiality. Although the request for fladry was made by the school, it was later rescinded by Mr. Stoddard, who instead offered to provide a pamphlet about wolves.
