Chinook Salmon Returns Continue Strong
The fall Chinook salmon run remains robust across Klamath River tributaries, with significant increases observed over the past week:
Shasta River now shows 4,042 adult Chinook salmon through October 2 – a 54% increase from the 2,630 counted on September 25. This upward trajectory continues to exceed historical median values for this time of year.
Scott River has recorded dramatic growth with 183 adult Chinook salmon, up from just 13 the previous week. This represents a more than 14-fold increase as the run intensifies.
Jenny Creek counts have risen to 11 adult Chinook, up from 1 the prior week.
Bogus Creek has documented 8 adult Chinook salmon since monitoring began September 26, though technical issues with video storage between September 26-29 mean some data may be missing and could be added later if recoverable.
Shovel Creek recorded its first fish of the season with 2 Chinook salmon observed.
Coho Salmon Status
No Coho salmon have been detected at any monitoring stations through October 2. This aligns with typical seasonal patterns, as Coho generally arrive later in the fall spawning season.
Other Species
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) over 16 inches have also been observed, with 128 at Shasta River and 5 at Scott River.
Important Note
These preliminary counts represent only fish passing upstream of the monitoring stations. Significant portions of salmon populations spawn downstream of the counting facilities, particularly in Scott River and Bogus Creek, so total escapement numbers will be higher than these counts reflect.
