This summer, the quiet town of Etna, California, became a hub for sacred art as Saint Photios Orthodox Theological Seminary hosted its first Summer Intensive Iconography Workshop. From July 1 to July 5, 2024, participants from across the United States gathered to learn the ancient tradition of Orthodox iconography.

Led by expert instructors Schemanun Mother Justina Hagielisavetissa and Archimandrite Father Patrick Hagiosinaïtēs, the five-day workshop offered a unique blend of theological instruction and hands-on artistic practice. Participants, ranging from first-time painters to experienced iconographers, were guided through the process of creating their own icons.

“The workshop was an incredible opportunity to connect with our spiritual and artistic heritage,” said one attendee. “I never thought I’d be able to create something so meaningful in just five days.”

The event culminated in a farewell dinner served by local nuns, where Bishop Auxentios of Etna and Portland praised the participants’ efforts. As the workshop came to a close, many expressed their gratitude for the chance to participate in this ancient tradition.

This successful event not only brought a piece of Orthodox culture to Etna but also highlighted the town’s growing role as a center for theological education and traditional arts.
