Sacramento, CA – March 2024 – The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has released the results of the 2023 California Youth Tobacco Survey, shedding light on tobacco use among youth in various counties, including Siskiyou. This comprehensive survey provides valuable insights into the smoking and vaping habits of adolescents, informing public health initiatives and policy decisions aimed at reducing youth tobacco use across the state.
Key Findings:
Siskiyou County:
- Cigarette Use: 6% of high school students reported having smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.
- E-Cigarette Use: 12% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days.
- Prevention Programs: Siskiyou County has seen a significant increase in participation in anti-tobacco education programs, with 75% of students reporting awareness of these initiatives.
Statewide Trends:
The 2023 survey results indicate a slight decline in traditional cigarette use among California youth, while e-cigarette use continues to pose a significant challenge. Statewide, 7% of high school students reported smoking cigarettes in the past 30 days, down from 8% in 2021. However, e-cigarette use remains steady at 13%.
Public Health Response:
In response to these findings, CDPH is redoubling its efforts to combat youth tobacco use through various initiatives, including:
- Enhanced education and awareness campaigns targeting the dangers of both traditional and electronic cigarettes.
- Increased support for school-based prevention programs.
- Stricter enforcement of laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to minors.
“These survey results highlight the ongoing need for targeted interventions to reduce tobacco use among our youth,” said Tomás J. Aragón , M.D., Dr. P.H., Director of CDPH. “We are committed to working with local communities, schools, and policymakers to create a healthier future for all Californians.”
