Last year, 60% of American adults believed that a person’s gender identity is determined by their birth sex (Pew research). When we break this down by political affiliation, we see that 39% of Democrats and 87% of Republicans believed this.
LGBTQ people exist among us. They are real people living with medical conditions they were born with. Transgender individuals only want to bring their birth sex in alignment with their brain’s gender identity. They want to live an authentic life just like everybody else. In 2022, there were an estimated 260 transgender individuals residing in Siskiyou County (wiliaminstitute.law.ucla.edu). It’s up to all of us, including politicians, to ensure they are allowed to live authentically.
Transgenderism has only been talked about since the 1960s, yet the archaeological record shows us that transgender people have existed for 5,000+ years from evidence found in ancient cultures like Samaria, Greece, and Persia. (lgbthealth.org/uk).
A recent Cedars-Sinai study showed that children as young as 7 years old have realized their gender identity does not match their physical gender.It’s only been recently that medical research has shown us that transgender identities are real. In 1995, Dutch neurobiologist Dick Swaab and others discovered structural differences between male and female brains. They found that male-to-female transsexuals had brains that more closely resembled those of a typical female brain and female-to-male transsexuals had brains that more closely resembled those of a typical male brain.
The medical term for transgender is gender dysphoria, which describes the mismatch between a persons assigned birth sex and their brain’s gender identity (male or female). This mismatch occurs because the hormonal changes in the fetus were not in sync with its brain and sex development.
We don’t discriminate against non-transgender children born with physical or mental birth anomalies such as missing or deformed limbs, downs syndrome or mentally retardation, yet 46% of American adults favor making it illegal for health care professionals to provide someone younger than 18 years old with medical care for gender transition (pewresearch.org; 2022). Currently, eighteen states have made it against the law to treat transgender children with hormonal treatments and/or surgery to bring their body in line with their brain. This is discrimination and blatant child abuse. Imagine if it was illegal for a doctor to treat any child under 18 years old who has a physical or mental anomaly.
Transgender parents are following scientific facts and doing what is best for their transgender child’s happiness, mental health and growth. They are trying to allow their child to be who their brain says they are. Recent medical studies from Stanford University have found that transgender individuals beginning hormone treatments in adolescence had fewer thoughts of suicide and were less likely to experience major mental health disorders.
In 2020 and 2023, LaMalfa introducedH.R. 8012 and H.R. 3328, which would prohibit gender reassignment medical interventions on minors. He also introducedH.R. 8013 and H.R.3329, which would prohibit taxpayer-funded gender reassignment medical interventions. Doug LaMalfa is working hard to prevent transgender children from living as close to a normal life as possible. LaMalfa’s actions, based on his beliefs, will result in unnecessary mental suffering and increased risk of suicide for transgender individuals. This is blatant child abuse and LaMalfa approves and supports it.
LaMalfa further believes that transgender individuals are not deserving of equal rights. In 2019, he voted against H.R. 5: Equity Act. This act prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in a wide variety of areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system. LaMalfa believes that transgender individuals do not deserve to be treated as equals.
How would LaMalfa react if he woke up tomorrow and discovered that Jesus had given him a female brain? Maybe then he would accept LGBTQ individuals as part of our common humanity just as Jesus does.
