Lots of New Books for McCloud Children

The McCloud Library received 103 books worth $1,200 through a grant from the Pilcrow Foundation that McCloud Elementary School children got to pick out themselves.

On Tuesday, the 2nd and 3rd grade classes at McCloud Elementary School visited the library and selected new books to check out. They also made crafts and enjoyed snacks provided by the library afterward.

Tom Evans, President of Friends of the Library, initiated the grant by contributing one-third ($400) of the required match, which the Pilcrow Foundation matched with the remaining two-thirds ($800), resulting in 103 books for children ages 4 through 10. This is the second time the library has received this grant โ€” the first was in 2003.

In addition to the Pilcrow Foundation grant, Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman of Colorado donated $403 worth of math and science books, totaling 21 volumes, and Dr. Bill Strawbridge and Meg Wallhagen of California contributed $300 worth of health and wellness books, adding another 18 volumes. The combined value of all books received came to $1,908.

Volunteer librarians Nancy Smith and Eileen Bauer โ€” who have served the library for five and seven years, respectively โ€” worked closely with local children to identify their interests and researched the Pilcrow Foundation catalogs to fulfill their requests.
