Dear Editor,
The San Francisco Chronicle account of Representative Huffman’s first foray into his redrawn CA-2 district was revealing, though not in the way intended. While the article framed the North State as “a scene from a sitcom,” it highlighted what the people of this district already know: they have been an afterthought to the political establishment for decades.
I visited Alturas and Yreka on December 1–5, 2025, weeks before Representative Huffman. I went because Siskiyou’s timber economy is in steep decline. The Spring Fire threatened 174 structures near Mount Shasta. The Roseburg Veneer Plant closed in December 2025. Wolf-livestock conflicts are intensifying. Then came the SBA disaster declaration. These are not problems you solve with a good attitude—they require comprehensive legislation.
The article quotes Huffman saying the wolf issue is “a little bit new” to him. The people of CA-2 cannot afford a representative on a learning curve. They need one who has already done the work.
I have done that work. I have drafted three comprehensive federal bills: the CA-2 Food Security and Economic Resilience Act (addressing forest health emergency, timber revitalization, wildfire defense, and firefighter support), the North Coast and Redwood Country Comprehensive Healthcare Act (tackling the rural healthcare crisis across all nine counties), and the CA-2 CAFE CH Act (addressing affordability, housing, and economic security). I have also filed five formal challenges to halt the displacement of ranching families from Point Reyes National Seashore, am collecting signatures for a Congressional Field Hearing Petition, and am circulating a Nationwide Citizen Petition to protect all federal public lands. At the state level, I submitted the California Affordability Act and California Sustainability Act to Assemblymember Damon Connolly’s “There Ought to Be a Law” contest. Download the acts at https://www.vote-roar.com/assembyperson-damon-conollys-there-ought-to-be-a-law-bill-submissions
While the Honorable Jared Huffman is an Environmental Recreationist, I am an Environmental Realist. I approach humanity’s relationship with the land as a stewardship species. The people of CA-2 deserve an honest economy for all.
Respectfully,
Gregory Burgess
