KNF PRESS RELEASE
YREKA, Calif., Augut 31, 2025 โ An emergency area closure is in effect on the Klamath National Forest beginning August 31st due to the Blue Fire south of Seiad, California. The closure area is south of CA Highway 96 from the Scott River Road westward to Grider Ridge, just south of Seiad. Grider Ridge delineates the western boundary of the closure, which then extends to the east through the Maple Spring area and on to Lake Mountain Lookout and Browns Knob, where it turns to the northeast to tie in with the intersection of Highway 96 and the Scott River Road.
A section of the Pacific Crest Trail is within the closure area and extends from Seiad through the closure polygon and into the Marble Mountain Wilderness to the junction with the Kelsey National Recreation Trail. The closure area also includes Grider Creek Campground and the Grider Creek and Cold Spring trailheads.
To provide for public safety during the ongoing Blue Fire, the emergency closure prohibits the following acts:
- Going into or being upon any National Forest System lands within the Blue Fire Closure Area.
- Being on any National Forest System trails within the Blue Fire Closure Area.
- Being on any National Forest System roads within the Blue Fire Closure Area.
- Entering or using any Developed Recreation Sites within the Blue Fire Closure Area.
The closure is in effect from August 31 through September 20, 2025.

An additional area closure has gone into effect on the forest due to the Dillon Fire affecting a small area north of Dillon Creek Campground in the southwestern corner of the forest. The Klamath National Forest is in fire restrictions. Before visiting the forest, please review the restrictions athttps://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/klamath/alerts/fire-restrictions. Among other things, campfires are only permitted in designated recreation sites and wilderness. Please be cautious with anything that can start a wildfire. It only takes one spark from an unattended campfire, a ricocheting bullet, driving on a flat tire, or dragging a trailer safety chain to start a wildfire.
- ย Blue Fire Closure Order: Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. ยง 551 and 36 C.F.R. ยง 261.50(a) and (b), and to provide for public safety, the following acts are prohibited within the Happy Camp-Oak Knoll Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest. This order is effective from August 31st, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. through September 20, 2025.
1. Going into or being upon any National Forest System lands within the Blue Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on the attached map. 36 C.F.R. ยง 261.52(e).
2. Being on any National Forest System trails within the Blue Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on the attached map. 36 C.F.R. ยง 261.55(a).
3. Being on any National Forest System roads within the Blue Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on the attached map. 36 C.F.R ยง 261.54(e).
4. Entering or using any Developed Recreation Sites within the Blue Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on the attached map. 36 C.F.R. ยง 261.58(b)
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. ยง 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.
2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.
3. Owners or lessees of land in the area, to the extent necessary to access their property.
These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 C.F.R. Part 261, Subpart A.
A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both. 16 U.S.C. ยง 551 and 18 U.S.C. ยงยง 3559, 3571, and 3581.
