Search and Rescue Awareness Month Highlights Busy Season in Siskiyou County

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. — June, recognized as Search and Rescue Awareness Month, has underscored the critical role of Siskiyou County’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team as they navigate a demanding summer season. The county’s stunning landscapes, including 14,000-foot peaks and swift rivers, attract adventurers but also present significant risks. SAR volunteers respond around the clock to emergencies involving injured, stranded, or missing individuals in remote and rugged terrain.

This month, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office conducted two major multi-day search operations. The first involved Jeffrey Plum, who was swept away by the Klamath River while swimming. Tragically, Plum was recovered deceased on June 6. The second operation, still ongoing, focuses on Lesner Noe Velasquez Cardenas, a hiker last seen attempting to summit Mount Shasta. These incidents highlight the emotional toll on SAR volunteers and the critical need for preparedness when exploring the wilderness.

“Our volunteers are vital to ensuring safe returns for those exploring Siskiyou’s natural wonders,” said a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. The public is encouraged to support the team by joining the Siskiyou County Sheriff Search & Rescue Association or making donations to aid their efforts.
