Fire Adapted Community Fuel Reduction Near Mt Shasta City

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif, May 29, 2024— The Shasta McCloud Management Unit of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest continues forest resiliency and fuel reduction activities adjacent to Mt Shasta City in the summer and fall of 2024. 

The project is just east of the community, in the vicinity of the Bear Springs trail system and Big Canyon south of Highway 89. Contract equipment will masticate brush and small trees. Hand crews will cut and pile brush and small trees and fall hazard trees within a 200-acre area. 

This is a component of the Mt. Shasta I-Zone Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project which was designed in alignment with the national effort to share the responsibility of developing and maintaining fire adapted communities to protect life, property and critical infrastructure in the wildland and urban interface. The goal of the treatments around Bear Springs trail system and Big Canyon is to create a defensible zone in which fire suppression efforts can be utilized to protect the community and adjoining federal lands when wildfires occur. 

Recreating public need to be aware of personnel, equipment and large trucks that will be working in the area or entering roadways. Portions of the Bear Springs Trail may be impacted when mastication operations are underway. Information will be posted at the trailhead when operations are occurring within proximity of the trails.
