On the evening of March 6th, 2024, a Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Lieutenant discovered a large 2022 Hino box truck stopped in the middle of Shasta Vista Drive. Upon investigating, the Lieutenant noticed a strong odor of cannabis coming from the rear of the vehicle. The driver, Jairong Yu, 53, of Castro Valley, CA, informed the Lieutenant that he was hired by a start-up dispensary called “Sun Co” in Oakland, CA, to deliver 1,500 live cannabis plants to an illegal cultivation site in the Mount Shasta Vista subdivision of Siskiyou County.
Further investigation revealed that neither the start-up dispensary nor the box truck had the necessary licenses from the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) for growing, transporting, or selling cannabis. Jenny Su, Yu’s employer, confirmed this information when contacted by the Lieutenant.
Yu was subsequently arrested for possession and transportation of cannabis for sale and booked into the Siskiyou County Jail. SCSO Deputies conducted a thorough search of the box truck and discovered over 2,300 individual cannabis plants. Detectives collected a random sample of the plants for evidence and pesticide analysis, and the remaining plants were destroyed.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has reported an increase in the interception of illegally cultivated cannabis plants and processed cannabis products connected to licensed distributors. More concerning is the fact that many of the tested cannabis products contain various pesticides that are prohibited in the United States.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating illegal cannabis cultivation and distribution, as well as the potential health risks posed by unregulated cannabis products containing banned pesticides.
