Six Rivers National Forest, CAย – The Orleans Complex, consisting of the Butler Fire and Red Fire, continues to pose significant threats to communities in Siskiyou County, with evacuation orders in place and deteriorating weather conditions expected to increase fire behavior over the coming days.
As of July 9, 2025, at 10:00 PM:
- Butler Fire: 2,934 acres, 0% containment
- Red Fire: 113 acres, 25% containment
The California Incident Management Team 1 (CA-CIMT 1) is expected to assume command of the Orleans Complex by Saturday as firefighting efforts intensify.
The Butler Fire saw significant activity today, particularly around Butler Flat as flames backed into the upper Butler drainage area. Fire crews have positioned themselves strategically to protect communities and infrastructure along the Salmon River corridor.
Emergency personnel are stationed at critical locations along Salmon River Road to monitor safety conditions and implement road closure plans if necessary. Firefighters have begun reopening pre-existing dozer lines from the 2024 Boise Fire, working closely with resource advisors and cultural resource specialists.
Smokejumpers and ground crews are making substantial progress containing the Red Fire, which remains at an estimated 113 acres in the remote Siskiyou Wilderness. Due to its isolated location, no structures are threatened and no evacuations have been ordered for this fire.
Cultural and resource advisors are coordinating with firefighters to protect valuable environmental and cultural resources in the wilderness area.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has issued the following evacuation orders and warnings:
Evacuation Orders (Mandatory)
- Zone SIS-1703ย (no residents)
- Zone SIS-1704ย (Butler Creek, Lewis Creek, Bloomer Mine residents, and Nordheimer Campground)
- Zone SIS-1803-Aย (no residents)
- Zone SIS-1707-Aย (evacuation order in effect)
Road Closures and Safety Concerns
Due to fire, smoke, and falling debris hazards, residents should prepare for potential delays and road closures along Salmon River Road between Butler Flat and Nordheimer Campground.
Currently Closed:
- Nordheimer Campground
- Oak Bottom Campground
Drivers are advised to check www.roads.dot.ca.gov for current road conditions before traveling to the area.
Weather Forecast Raises Concerns
The National Weather Service forecast for the next several days indicates conditions that will likely increase fire behavior:
- Rising temperatures
- Decreasing relative humidity
- Increasing mixing height for smoke dispersal
These factors will dry fuels and provide more oxygen to the fires. While winds are expected to remain mild, they may be variable due to the mountainous topography.
Air Quality and Visibility
Smoke is expected to settle into valleys overnight and persist during daylight hours, creating reduced visibility that could impact driving safety. Falling debris along roadways poses additional hazards.
Vehicle Safety
Travelers are urged to:
- Ensure trailer chains are properly secured and not dragging
- Check that vehicles are not throwing sparks from wheels, exhaust, or other components
- Report suspected wildfires by calling 911
