CARS, SURFBOARDS, AND GIRLS – MAYBE NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER.

WHY WE LIVE HERE – PART FIVE

Once again thanks to the Red Scarf Society, bless their hearts, for bringing to Siskiyou County another great musical experience Tuesday night: a Beach Boys tribute band called Sail On. They were wonderful, especially for a geezer like me.  I have vivid personal memories of Southern California beaches during Spring Break at college in the 60’s.  The original Beach Boys were a big deal back then, and I loved their music, especially their early records, which were pretty basic.  Their later music got a little more complicated.  My favorite was “I Get Around.”

I get around

I’m getting’ bugged driving up and down the same old strip … I gotta find a new place where the kids are hip

My buddies and me are getting’ real well known … Yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone

We always take my car ‘cause it’s never been beat … And we’ve never missed yet with the girls we meet

None of the guys go steady ‘cause it wouldn’t be right … To leave their best girl home on Saturday night.

I get around

Round round, get around

I get around

Not exactly Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  What would he think if he was transported in time to a Southern California beach in the 60’s?  Would he think he’d died and gone to heaven?

Probably, but we don’t know for sure.

The performance was at the Yreka Church of the Nazarene’s theatre, a nice venue with good acoustics that holds about 300 people.  It was full Tuesday night.  There were a lot of grey-haired people like me and my wife.  Everyone was into it big time, some got up and danced.  I’m not naming names; my lips are sealed.  You know who you are.  The ones that didn’t actually get up and dance were clapping their hands and bouncing throughout the entire show.

Sail On is the most booked Beach Boys Tribute Band in the world.  Four of their five members are from Nashville, one from Atlanta.  They are professional and versatile musicians with their vocals, guitars, keyboards and drums.

Again, kudos to the Red Scarf Society for bringing this to Siskiyou County.  This is the 20th year that the Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts has been doing this.  Next on their agenda:  May 10 — William Florian Trio – “Those Were the Days” featuring songs from Peter, Paul, and Mary, Pete Seeger, John Denver, Mamas and Papas, and the Beatles.

August 7 – Free country music concert on the Mall at the Siskiyou County Fair.

Stay tuned.
