NEWS FROM THE AVERY THEATRE: March, 2024

Despite the vagaries of the weather, the Avery Theatre has been a hub of activity, with lots more fun coming up this month!

Here’s a quick recap of some of the happenings at the Avery in February:  a lively crowd enjoyed the showing of “Dirty Dancing” on February 17th, with delightful extras such as a photo booth, raffle, and adult beverages from the Quady North winery and our own Etna Brewery.   Many thanks to the Jones Family for their sponsorship of this movie!  During the weekend of February 23-25, the MAD Players brought live theater to the Avery, with a reprise of their melodrama, “Gold Meddling…or, Cain’t We All Jest Git Along?”  There was much audience participation in booing the villain, sighing “Aaahhh!” as the hero and heroine fell in love, and generously laughing at all the corny jokes and puns.

February came to a close with an exciting milestone:  at the Scott Valley Theatre Company (SVTC)  board meeting on February 29th, a contract was signed with the prestigious firm of NMR Architects and Engineers of Redding, CA.  Funded by a grant from the California Arts Council, the contract will result in the development of a plan for the phased renovation of our beloved Avery Theater.  Having a detailed plan with specific goals will then allow the SVTC to apply for grants to turn those goals into accomplished projects, such as renovating the bathrooms so that they are handicapped accessible, and improving the heating and cooling systems in the theater.  It is anticipated that the projects will be accomplished over a period of years, with the most urgent renovation needs being attended to first.

February was a busy month, but March promises to be every bit as exciting, if not more!  Coming up on March 16th is a showing of the delightful family classic, “Mary Poppins” (the original version with Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke).  Doors open at 4:30pm and the movie starts at 5:00pm.  Tickets are $10 each, but are only $5 for children 5 years old and under, and for students with an ASB card.  And…grandparents who bring their little grand-darlings get 50% off the admission price of their own tickets!  Many thanks to our sponsor, Valley Concepts Painting, who also did a wonderful job on the recent repainting of the Avery bathrooms!   Join us for an evening that is guaranteed to be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Come on back to the Avery the following weekend, for the world premiere of “William’s Whimsical Wonderlight”!  This is an original production, written and directed by Etna High School senior Lucy Denman as her senior project, with support from her mentor, EHS drama and art teacher, Lynn Karpinski.  All of the actors are also EHS students.  Performances will be at 7pm on Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd, with a 2pm matinee on Sunday, March 24th.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (children 5 and under get in free), and are available for pre-sale by calling (530) 643-2173.  They will also be available at the door.

As always, thank  you so much for your support of the Avery Theatre.  Your attendance at movies and live performances is always welcome and appreciated.  Thank you also for all the many other ways that you all support this valuable community resource, through your donations of time, talents, and financial gifts.  And if you have been thinking it might be fun to get more involved with the Avery, we are always looking for volunteers to help with ticket-taking, concessions, clean-up, and other projects.  Just let us know, and we’ll sign you up!
