William E. Simpson II, a seasoned ethologist and conservationist, has been nominated for the position of Director of the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse & Burro Program, with the position set to open in January 2025.
Simpson, currently operating the Wild Horse Ranch in Yreka, California, has garnered notable endorsement from Oregon State Representative Court Boice, who praised Simpson’s extensive experience in natural resource management and wild horse conservation.
“Captain Bill is unquestionably the premiere knowledgeable person in the World related to North American Wild Horses and Burros,” stated Rep. Boice, citing Simpson’s decade-long track record in wildlife management and conservation efforts.
The nomination comes at a crucial time for the BLM’s Wild Horse & Burro Program, which faces ongoing challenges in managing America’s wild horse populations. Simpson’s background combines practical ranching experience with scientific research, potentially offering a fresh approach to wild horse management.
Simpson currently ranks sixth among nominees on the Kennedy MAHA website, though he is the only candidate specifically seeking the Wild Horse & Burro Program Director position. The final appointment decision will be made as part of a larger government transition in early 2025.
