Bee Kind Bakery and Catering

There is a new bakery that just opened in Dunsmuir called Bee Kind Bakery & Catering. It’s not only a great place to go for a food break, but a destination to enjoy local art and events.

But first, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here: Bee Kind Bakery & Catering is not just a regular bakery, the also provides gluten-free and other restricted types of foods. Proprietor Brandy Black is known for rotating flavors seasonally. “I don’t like repetition, I keep things unique,” she says. Brandy is also known for her scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, desserts, and grab-and-go lunch items.

Brandy Black offers those participating in the drawing class some of her homemade scones.

Looking for a kitchen to expand her catering, Brandy was stopped in her tracks coming upon this spacious building at 5853 Sacramento Avenue in Dunsmuir.

“This space had so much more potential than just as a kitchen, it was a bakery before and I’ve worked in bakeries my whole life, so this space tied all of my ideas together; a gallery, a bakery, a place for pop-up dinners, events, and catering. It became bigger than I ever thought.”

Aaron Hoerber teaches a beginning art class showing how to make and shadow shapes to give depth. Showing their works of art from the drawing class are Kelly Burnham, Aaron Hoerber, and Colleen Blount

Using local drip coffee from Northbound Roasters, and having breakfast sandwiches and homemade pastries on hand, Bee Kind Bakery & Catering already has regulars and is ringing up as many as 70 transactions each day.

Already, Brandy is interviewing for another baker position.
She wants to get back into catering for events and retreats.

The building was originally an opera house in 1909 but burned down. It held a variety of businesses through the years including an auto parts store before it became a bakery.  Brandy Black along with her husband Aaron Hoerber, who is an artist, found this a perfect place for their passions.

Not only are the walls covered with local art, but there is a gift shop filled with local art like hand-blown glass, locally written books, honey and bee-related items, a children’s section, coffee, tea, and jarred wellness.

Kelly Burnham shows off some of the hand-blown glass pieces she purchased from the gift shop in the Bee Kind Bakery and Catering. The pieces were crafted by family member Jeremy Hoerber from Mammoth Glass Art Studio in Palo Cedro, California.

Brandy was looking for something with a big kitchen for her catering and Aaron wanted something spacious to display local art on the walls and engage the public interest in art workshops and events.

Coming from a family of artists, Aaron graduated from Chico State with a bachelor’s in art and works in the art material industry.

Aaron already held a Dunsmuir 2nd Saturday free drawing class earlier this month. He wants to have art workshops and events like plein air painting meetups and art classes like the one he just had. He is interested in joining forces with Siskiyou Arts Museum and another local favorite, Cobra Lily Bar & Bottle to have art walks in Dunsmuir.
